The first series of Ben Elton's Shakespeare sitcom Upstart Crow aired on BBC2 in 2016.
With David Mitchell as Will Shakespeare and co-starring Liza Tarbuck, Harry Enfield, Mark Heap, Paula WIlcox, Gemma Whelan and Rob Rouse, directed by Matt Lipsey and produced by Gareth Edwards for the BBC, the first six episodes were a hit, a very palpable hit and so Upstart Crow returns for series two later this year.
The live studio sitcom follows struggling playwright Will Shakespeare as he tries to balance family life with the ever increasing demands of his literary career. In seriess one, Will finds inspiration for Romeo from an unlikely source; mislays a nearly treasonous masterpiece; gets tricked into a very embarrassing pair of tights; has a spot of bother with the wife over some sonnets; meets three witches who predict great things for him; and borrows some money on some rather unusual conditions.
Grant provided a mock tudor score as well as onscreen music, heavy on the lute and recorders, and the classic Elton/Olding/Shakespeare ballad "The Maid She Bonketh Every Day".
